Suspect in Weirton standoff dead

Law enforcement was on scene on Weir Avenue in Weirton for much of Saturday after a shooting which led to an hours-long standoff. The suspect, identified by police as Carl Gist, was pronounced dead at Weirton Medical Center after being shot by police. -- Craig Howell

WEIRTON - A man police say shot his neighbor and then barricaded himself in his home, leading to an hours-long standoff, Saturday, is dead.

Officers were called to the 3100 block of Weir Avenue at approximately 10:30 a.m.

According to information released by the Weirton Police Department, Carl Gist, 82, shot his neighbor, Cassandra Jeter, 67, in the neck, while she was mowing her lawn. When officers attempted to make contact with Gist, he reportedly barricaded himself in his home.

After several hours of unsuccessful negotiations with Gist, at approximately 3 p.m., gas was deployed into the residence. Gist exited following several minutes, holding a semi-automatic pistol. Police ordered Gist to drop the weapon multiple times, at which time he pointed the gun at officers who opened fire.

Gist was provided first aid and transported to Weirton Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Jeter was flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh-area hospital for treatment. Her condition was unknown as of Saturday night.

The West Virginia State Police is leading the investigation into the incident.

In addition to the Weirton Police Department and State Police, units from the Weirton Fire Department, Hancock County Sheriff's Department, Brooke County Sheriff's Department and Hancock County Ambulance were on the scene.
