NEW CUMBERLAND -- With the start of the school year less than one month away, officials within Hancock County Schools continue to make preparations by scheduling training sessions and filling various positions within the district.
As part of Monday's meeting, the Hancock County Board of Education approved a recommendation from Superintendent Dan Enich to name Kristin Bissett to the position of director of secondary, adult and career education, a post located at the John D. Rockefeller IV Career Center.
Bissett will be moving to the career center from her current job as principal at Weir High School, which she has held since June 2016.
Also approved Monday was the hiring of Matthew DeAngelis as a physical education teacher at Weir Middle School.
On the agenda, but not voted on, was the naming of a new assistant superintendent of schools, with Enich saying he was opting to pull it from consideration for now.
"I'm not ready to act on it," Enich said.
In other personnel matters before the board, Monday, approvals were given to:
The resignations of Elissa Greathouse as fine arts teacher at Oak Glen High, and Debra Dunham as countywide substitute teacher;
The transfer of Jennifer Cooper from multi-categorical/autism at Oak Glen Middle to the same position at Weir High; Jaime Fair from fourth grade teacher at Weirton Elementary to first grade teacher at Weirton Elementary; and Amy Hannahs from multi-categorical/autism at Oak Glen Middle to countywide educational diagnostician IEP specialist;
The assignment of Erica Bennett and Kelly Rine as substitutes;
An altering with the mutual agreement with both high school counselors to add five days to the beginning of the school year, at the discretion of the head principal, to assist with scheduling before students return;
Assigning Steven Kettler as head golf coach at Weir High;
Transferring Sylvia Guthrie from Cook III at the Central Kitchen to Cook II at Oak Glen Middle; Jenny Colaber from supervisory aide/AM at New Manchester Elementary to supervisory aide II-IV/ECCAT K at Weirton Elementary; Miranda Gibson from supervisory aide II-IV/ECCAT first grade at Weirton Elementary to the same post at Allison Elementary; Deedy Hebrock from supervisory aide II-IV/ECCAT first grade to supervisory aide II-IV/ECCAT/AM Pre-K at Allison Elementary; Casey Kell from supervisory aide II-IV/ECCAT first grade at Weirton Elementary to supervisory aide II-IV/AM K-4 at Allison Elementary; and Linda Nicoles from supervisory aide II-IV/ECCAT first grade at New Manchester Elementary to supervisory aide II-IV/AM K-4 at Weirton Elementary;
Assigning Jamie Moore as supervisory aide II-IV/AM K-4 at Weirton Elementary;
Assigning Jeffrey S. Konnovitch as Custodian II at Weir Middle School.
Enich noted a special meeting of the board may be needed in August to ensure all necessary positions are filled. The board's regular meetings are set for Aug. 14 and Aug. 28, both at 5:30 p.m. at the John D. Rockefeller IV Career Center.
The district's first instructional day for students is Aug. 23.
In other business Monday, the board approved contractual agreements with The Children's Academy, Weirton Heights Daycare and Northern Panhandle Head Start to provide Universal Pre-K classrooms.
"These are our standard Pre-K contracts," explained Director of Special Education Erica Sauer, noting the agreements are with the same partners as in previous years.
The one change is the establishment of a Head Start location at Allison Elementary.
The board also declared several pieces of equipment as surplus items, including three Smartboards and three projectors from Maintenance, and one television, seven personal computers and three monitors from the IT Department.
