Firefighters dispatched to roof fire
WELLSBURG -- Several fire departments were dispatched to a structure fire in the Louise area off Cross Creek Road at about 11:55 p.m. Monday.
Officials with the Hooverson Heights and Follansbee departments reported working to extinguish a blaze between the attic and metal roof recently installed on the one-story home.
Firefighters from Wellsburg, Franklin Community and Weirton also were dispatched, and many remained at the scene for several hours.
Assistant Follansbee Fire Chief Tom R. Diserio confirmed the home's occupant had evacuated, unharmed, before they arrived.
Artist, author to appear at museum
TORONTO -- In conjunction with the Toronto Art Festival this weekend, the Main Street Museum will be hosting two special guests: artist Bob Brandt of Steubenville and local author Bob Petras.
A survivor of the Brown's Island coke plant explosion in 1972, Brandt came to see the location in a different light, as an area once occupied by Native Americans.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, the museum will be displaying Native American artifacts, such as arrowheads and fishing line sinkers, he has found on the island as well as paintings he was inspired to create.
Author Bob Petras also will be on hand from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday to sign copies of his new book, "Release the Belgium." The book includes a short novel and a few short stories, all inspired by his youth in Toronto.
As its name suggests, the museum once operated on Main Street but earlier this year, it moved to the Karaffa Recreation Center, formerly Karaffa School, on Dennis Way.
The new location has allowed the museum's volunteers to display more items, including a circa 1895 mail wagon that has been moved from storage to the former science room.
