Time winding down to experience Vikings

PITTSBURGH — International touring exhibition Vikings: Warriors of the North Sea is leaving Carnegie Science Center on Sept. 4.

From their epic travels to their rich mythology, prepare to be captivated by the true history of Vikings and encounter a Viking “warrior” each Sunday in August from noon to 3 p.m.

Visitors get a new perspective as they examine 140 artifacts, which came to Pittsburgh from the National Museum of Denmark, including centuries-old bracelets, brooches, pendants, swords, axes and much more. The collection includes personal care items such as a comb — which Vikings are credited with inventing — and tweezers.

“I can boast that the National Museum in Copenhagen has one of the finest, perhaps the finest, collection of Viking artifacts in the world, and we are happy to share with you at Carnegie Science Center,” said Peter Pentz, curator of the National Museum of Denmark. “We hope by bringing these artifacts from Denmark to Pittsburgh will encourage and stimulate interests both in youth and elderly.”

These recent archaeological discoveries that are showcased shed new light on the Viking Age, dispelling long-held stereotypes about its people, traditions and influence.

“Vikings dominate pop culture today, but they are often misrepresented and misunderstood. We hope this exhibition shares the true nature of the Scandinavians we know as Vikings,” said Jason C. Brown, director of Carnegie Science Center.

On Aug. 13, 20 and 27, visitors will encounter the actor, Aeyron Moore, from the Vikings commercial in the exhibition. The exhibition features a life-size replica of a Viking boat, a map detailing the expeditions Vikings took all over Europe without using a compass, and a digital touch screen allowing visitors to learn and play a digital version of a popular Viking strategy game that pre-dates the introduction of chess in Europe.
