Hancock school board approves PRO agreement

NEW CUMBERLAND - Almost two weeks after the Hancock County Commission approved an updated Prevention Resource Officer agreement, the county Board of Education gave its blessing.
Under the agreement, sheriff's deputies are assigned to Allison Elementary, New Manchester Elementary, Oak Glen Middle, Oak Glen High, and the John D. Rockefeller IV Career Center, with a "rover" to be stationed at the Alternative Learning Center when not needed to fill in at other locations.
The county commission gave its approval to the agreement during its Sept. 14 meeting.
"It is extremely similar to the agreement in April," Superintendent Dan Enich explained. "They wanted a couple of changes."
The school board originally approved the PRO agreement in April, with it being presented to the commission in July. Commissioners, however, tabled the agreement multiple times, citing concerns over the funding allotment for the program.
During Monday's school board meeting, though, Enich said, other than changing the signatory from the board to Enich from former superintendent Dawn Petrovich, the only change made to the agreement was in Section 1.09 to adjust a clause stating PRO's "shall" be asked to attend extracurricular events to they "may be" asked to attend the events.
In other business, Monday, the school board went into executive session for 58 minutes to discuss a request for reconsideration of the superintendent's decision regarding a player/parent contract violation. The board was joined in executive session by attorney Alex Risovich and two residents, with no action taken after the board returned to open session.
The board also approved a recommendation to form a National Junior Honor Society at Weir Middle School. As part of the discussion, members on the board asked if there was any interest in similar action at Oak Glen Middle.
Meal Contract Agreements were approved for The Children's Academy, The Northern Panhandle Head Start, and Weirton Heights Daycare for the 2023-24 school year. A natural gas agreement also was approved with AK Energy Management LLC.
The board declared surplus inventory from Oak Glen Middle, to include 14 large computers, 17 keyboards and 19 computer mice.
