NEW CUMBERLAND -- While city officials continue their work to move New Cumberland's municipal offices to a new location, the current New Cumberland City Building currently is on the auction block.
City Council has been working for much of this year on plans to relocate municipal offices from its current location at 104 North Court St., which, at one time, had been the New Cumberland Elementary School, to a site identified as the Ewing Building located on River Avenue.
During their meeting Monday, council members approved a contract of $6,500 for internal demolition and $23,000 for internal framing on the Ewing Building.
In the meantime, an online auction is under way for the North Court Street property, overseen by Kaufman Realty and Auctions of WV.
The auction, which is set to close at noon, Oct. 17, lists the building on its website as "New Cumberland Income Producing Commercial Building." A preview is set for noon to 1 p.m., Oct. 10.
According to information on the Kaufman Realty and Auctions website, the property is approximately 70,850 square feet with the potential of an annual income of $59,685 through yearly lease agreements.
It is a three-story building with a gymnasium. The gymnasium roof was redone in 2011 and the main roof replaced in 2015, with the building served by a gas hot water boiler heat system, outdoor air conditioning units and mini splits, city water and city sewer.
Council authorized the appraisal and sale of the building in July. The decision came after city officials reported discussions with county commissioners about the possibility of purchasing the building, which is located next to the Hancock County Courthouse. That proposal was turned down, according to the city.
