Motorcyclist killed in collision
WELLSBURG -- A Weirton man was killed after he collided on his motorcycle with another vehicle Sunday morning.
Brooke County Sheriff Rich Beatty confirmed John Joseph William Miller, 37, of Weirton was thrown from his motorcycle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
He said Miller was wearing a motorcycle helmet.
Beatty confirmed Miller was northbound on state Route 2 near 24th Street when he attempted to pass the vehicle from the right as it was turning onto the side street.
Man charged with assault
WELLSBURG -- A Steubenville man has been charged with kidnapping, malicious assault and conspiring in connection with the assault of a man near Cross Creek Road on May 6.
Hardin M. Martin III, 22, of 3267 St. Charles Drive, was arrested on the charges following an investigation by the Brooke County Sheriff's Department.
According to a criminal complaint, Hardin and two other men picked up a fourth man in Weirton on the pretense they were taking him to a party.
The complaint states Hardin drove the man to an area near Cross Creek and New Camp roads, where he and the other two men punched and kicked him, fracturing his jaw.
The victim told sheriff's deputies he believes he was assaulted because he was falsely accused of sexually assaulting someone known to them.
The case against Martin is pending in Brooke County Magistrate Court.
Charges filed for shooting incident
WEIRTON -- A Toronto man faces multiple charges after allegedly firing shots on a local street on Sept. 13.
City Police have charged Bryan D. Barr, 19, of 3049 township Road 242, with wanton endangerment involving a firearm, fleeing on foot, public intoxication and being a person under 21 carrying a deadly weapon.
According to a criminal complaint, police were investigating a report of shots being fired in the 3200 block of Elm Street when they heard additional shots and found three suspects on two bicycles and a scooter in the 4000 block of Washington Street.
Police said Barr was one of the three and attempted to flee but was apprehended in an alley. They said a .25 caliber pistol was found in his pocket, with a spent round in the chamber and three rounds in the magazine.
The officers said six other rounds were found in a bag in his possession and Barr positively tested for alcohol consumption.
Police have linked Barr to shots fired at two homes in the 200 block of Hudson Avenue around the same date.
The case against Barr is pending in Brooke County Magistrate Court.
Museum to open for Applefest
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Museum and Culture Center, at 704 Charles St., will be open Friday through Sunday during the Wellsburg Applefest.
Visitors to the museum will find a life-sized Johnny Appleseed nutcracker, on loan from the Nutcracker Village of Steubenville; the Johnny Appleseed costume worn by long-time Applefest co-chairman Michael O'Brien and many displays reflecting the work, education, home lives and military service of Brooke County residents through the years.
Hancock board to meet Tuesday
NEW CUMBERLAND -- The Hancock County Board of Education will hold its next meeting at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, at Oak Glen High School.
The meeting originally had been scheduled for Monday.
