WEIRTON -- A long-awaited grand opening is only a few days away.
Primanti Bros. Restaurant and Bar will open its newest location, at 255 St. Thomas Drive, Weirton, with a a series of giveaways and other festivities.
"Most businesses don't open their doors and then immediately give away the house to start their first day," said Adam Golomb, CEO of Primanti Bros. "But, we've never really been one to stick to the rules. And, we've been focused on coming to Weirton for years -- so there's no better way to celebrate."
Residents are invited to join an opening celebration tailgate beginning at 5 a.m., Thursday, with doors set to open at 10 a.m. The first 100 patrons through the door will receive free sandwiches for a year, according to company officials.
As part of Thursday's opening, Primanti will have games, a disc jockey and various prizes available for those wishing to stop by.
Announced in January, Primanti will take up a portion of a 7,000-square-foot building constructed within the Three Springs business plaza which also has seen recent openings of such businesses as ALDI, Big Lots, O'Reilly Auto Pats and Pet Supplies Plus.
Developer and property owner Jesse Krieg previously explained Primanti selected Weirton after a lengthy search of the Ohio Valley.
"They were looking at seven locations," Krieg said in January, noting negotiations for the Weirton property began in 2021.
The restaurant traces its roots to 1933, when Joe Primanti operated a sandwich cart, and then a storefront, in Pittsburgh's Strip District. Later joined by his two brothers, the business became known for their sandwiches, which combined typical ingredients with the "side" of fries, with local shift workers and delivery drivers becoming a mainstay of their early clientele.
Today, Primanti's has more than 40 locations in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Florida, Maryland, Michigan and Indiana.
The Weirton location will be a full-service restaurant, featuring numerous televisions and an expanded menu, along with a stainless steel bar, and glass-enclosed patio with garage doors.
The restaurant also will feature Primanti Bros' half-priced happy hour, wing specials on Sundays and Mondays, and a buy-one-get-one pizza deal on Thursdays.
Grae-Con served as general contractor for the project, with WesBanco providing financing for its construction.
