WEIRTON -- Weirton Council met in a brief special session Monday evening, addressing a few items of business officials said needed to be acted upon before next month.
One new item set to go before council had been a proposed resolution adopting a new meeting time for council; however, Ward 4 Councilman George Ash, who had sponsored the resolution, announced he was pulling it from the agenda.
"There's no interest," Ash said. "I've talked to some members of council and there's no interest in changing the time."
Weirton Council's meetings currently are at 7 p.m. Under the pulled resolution, the time was proposed to have been changed to 5:30 p.m. According to a draft copy of the resolution the proposal was made in an effort "to increase the convenience for the public and reduce the challenge for the staff who attend said meetings."
Regular meetings of Weirton Council are established under guidance from Article VI, Section 1 of the city charter, which reads "Council shall hold an organization meeting on the first Monday following the commencement of their terms of office and shall thereafter meet in regular session of the first Monday following the first Tuesday of each month at a time and place to be specified by ordinance or resolution of the governing body."
As such, council must meet on the specified day, but can adjust the time.
In other business, council approved the second reading of three ordinances, including Ordinance 2212, amending the definition of "trailers" in the city's parking code, "so as to include tractor trailers, certain camping trailers, motor homes, and recreational vehicles," as defined under state law. Officials previously reported the ordinance was in response to issues of such vehicles being parked on city streets for extended periods of time.
The second reading of Ordinance 2213 and Ordinance 2214 also were approved, each establishing new minimum and maximum salary levels of specific non-union municipal employees within the city.
