Annual veterans clothing drive to begin Sunday

WEIRTON - For the ninth year, the Weirton Millsop Community Center is hosting a clothing drive dedicated to the men and women who have stepped forward to protect the country.

The annual Bob Busch Memorial Veterans Clothing Drive kicks off Sunday, with donations being collected at the Millsop Community Center through Nov. 17.

"It’s for the veterans; the ones that are here, and the ones who aren’t," noted Ron Spencer, an Army veteran and Weirton parks employee who has taken over organizing the drive in recent years.

The effort was founded by Busch, a U.S. Navy veteran who served during the Vietnam War, who wanted to assist area veterans by providing them with warm clothing ahead of the colder, winter months.

An active member of the Millsop Community Center until his death in April 2020, Busch approached Park Board officials about partnering for the drive, allowing the center to serve as the drop-off point.

Parks Program Director Chris Krishak noted donations should be new or gently-used clothing items, brought to the center either in bags or boxes. Donations can be left at the customer service desk at the main entrance to the community center.

In an effort to continue with Busch’s efforts, the drive offers one special recommendation for those planning to donate.

"He always wanted a pair of brand, new socks," Krishak said. "That was always his request."
