Hancock Commission gives support to WMC expansion

NEW CUMBERLAND -- Plans by Weirton Medical Center to expand its emergency department received support, Tuesday, from the Hancock County Commission.
WMC officials announced their plans earlier this month for a $9 million expansion for the hospital's emergency department, including the application for a grant from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration.
"The contribution WMC has on the regional quality of life is significant as one of the region's largest employers with nearly 1,500 employees," states the commission's letter of support. "Additionally, as the only trauma level emergency provider in Hancock and Brooke counties, expansion of WMC's emergency services is critical to meet the growing demands of the region. WMC's commitment to treat all emergency patients regardless of the ability to pay creates an irreplaceable safety net for the medical needs of many residents in our community."
Hospital officials have noted when Weirton Medical opened in 1978, it had an anticipated yearly volume of emergency room visits of 24,000. Today, upwards of 40,000 emergency room visits per year are made, according to the hospital.
The commission's letter points to the role WMC plays in the health of area residents.
"The hospital not only provides essential medical services but also contributes significantly to the overall quality of life in the region," the letter states. "With a comprehensive range of healthcare offerings, including emergency care, specialized treatments and community outreach programs, Weirton Medical Center ensures that residents have access to high-quality healthcare close to home. This accessibility not only enhances the overall health of the community but also establishes a sense of security and confidence among residents."
As part of WMC's expansion plans, the hospital's laboratory already has been relocated, and a new gastroenterology center is under development.
In other business, Tuesday, the commission:
Agreed to discontinue its contract with Paycom for the county's payroll services;
Approved the creation of a new bank account, the EMS Salary Enhancement Fund, which is required by state regulations;
Approved Morningstar Richards, William Beiling, Virginia Hatfield and Jacob Eureka to join the Hancock County Sheriff's Reserves, all effective Tuesday;
Accepted the resignation of Bob Connors, effective Nov. 17, with commissioners noting Connors' previous service to the county as a sheriff's deputy and his most recent role as a "gray coat" security personnel at the courthouse;
Approved the resignation of Darin Polen as executor in the estate of Robert P. Polen.
