WEIRTON -- The Weirton Transit Board of Trustees is set to hold a special meeting Monday as part of its continuing dissolution process.
The board has scheduled the meeting for 12:30 p.m. in Room 201 of the Weirton Municipal Building.
The agenda includes five items of action:
Adoption of amended and restated articles of incorporation;
Adoption of amended and restated bylaws;
Adoption of a resolution to dissolve, liquidate assets, and to adopt a plan of dissolution;
Adoption of a plan of dissolution and distribution of assets;
Hiring of an accountant for Weirton Transit Corp.
The board last met on Oct. 27, where members agreed to hire legal counsel to represent it through the dissolution process, which began in June along with a plan to transition public transit services in Weirton to the City of Weirton to be operated as a municipal department.
The Transit Board voted in June to begin the process of dissolving the private, non-profit entity which has overseen public transit services in Weirton since its founding in the late 1980s. The move followed the discovery of financial issues in the fall of 2021, which officials have said stemmed from the non-payment of taxes, as well as the resulting fees and penalties.
With assistance from Weirton Council, Transit officials were able to pay off those funds earlier this year, but came close to having to shut down transit services, at least temporarily, in June as a result of a lack of available revenue. A shutdown was averted through a paring down of routes and other services, which has continued.
Following guidance from the West Virginia Department of Transportation, Weirton Council voted in October to transition the service into a municipal department, effective Nov. 1.
