WEIRTON -- The City of Weirton kicked off the holiday season a little early Tuesday, lighting the Christmas tree in the city's north end and offering thanks to sponsors of one of the upcoming festivities.
City officials and invited guests gathered at the intersection of County Road and Pennsylvania Avenue, continuing what has become a tradition in recent years.
Mayor Harold "Bubba" Miller noted having a tree located in the city's north end, on the property of Cleveland-Cliffs Weirton's offices, harkens back to years gone by when a tree graced the same spot and the area was thriving with businesses, schools and homes.
"People ask me every year why we put a tree here," Miller said. "I say, you've got to know the history."
This year's tree was donated by the Grossi family, with Monica Grossi explaining it is a Fraser fir she had planted in the family's yard 20 years ago.
Tuesday's event also served as an opportunity for the city to offer thanks to Cleveland-Cliffs, Form Energy, Nick's Auto and Weirton Medical Center, all of whom are serving as major sponsors of the upcoming Christmas on Main Street event, which will take place Nov. 18 in front of the Millsop Community Center.
"This and Christmas on Main Street are not possible without the generosity of our sponsors," said City Manager Mike Adams, who also offered thanks to the Weirton Parks Board, city council and the city's electricians.
Christmas on Main Street, scheduled from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., will feature a variety of vendors, entertainment and free activities for residents, culminating in the lighting of the community Christmas tree in front of the community center and a fireworks display.
It is being organized by the Weirton Festival Committee, which also is holding a Gingerbread House Contest, with entries due by Friday. There are four categories for the contest: Business, Group Effort, Adult (18 and up) and Youth (10 to 17).
Those interested in entering the Gingerbread House Contest may do so by emailing weirtonfestivalcommittee@gmail.com, or by filling out the entry form available through the Christmas on Main Street or City of Weirton Facebook pages.
