Market Street Bridge closed to traffic ‘out of an abundance of caution’

CHARLESTON - The West Virginia Department of Transportation has announced the closure of the Market Street Bridge to vehicle and pedestrian traffic beginning today.

WVDOT has been monitoring the bridge on a three-month inspection cycle. As part of its previous insepction cycle, the weight limit was lowered to three tons. Following an inspection Wednesday, the decision was made to close the bridge out of an abundance of caution, according to a press release from WVDOT.

The Market Street Bridge was built in 1905, connecting an area of W.Va. Route 2 between Weirton and Follansbee to Steubenville. The longest of its three spans is 680 feet, and the bridge is just under 1,800 feet long.

WVDOT will provide updates on the status of the bridge at a later time. Detour routes are available through the use of the Veterans Memorial Bridge between Weirton and Steubenville, and the Wellsburg Bridge connecting an area south of Wellsburg to Brilliant.
