CHARLESTON -- Oak Glen Middle School is among the schools receiving funds for a variety of projects from the West Virginia School Building Authority, it was announced Monday.
Oak Glen Middle will receive $987,720 to assist with renovations to the existing building, Gov. Jim Justice, who serves as chair of the SBA, announced.
The funding is part of more than $111 million spread across 19 counties.
During the Dec. 4 Hancock County Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Dan Enich discussed plans for the funding, indicating the board had applied for $1.23 million.
"The head of the SBA actually came up himself and looked at Oak Glen Middle," Enich said.
Enich indicated the funding will go toward renovations to the left, back portion of the school building as a result of pyrite expansion on the property.
In particular, Enich said, the areas to be affected include the band room and the school's locker rooms, which will need to be closed off for between eight and 12 months once work begins.
"It's going to be an inconvenience," Enich said. "It needs to be done."
Located on the same campus as Oak Glen High School, Oak Glen Middle School was opened in 2005.
The Oak Glen Middle project is one of 13 to receive funding for renovations. Ten new schools also will be constructed as part of the round of funding, which Justice said is the largest annual award from the SBA since 2011.
