SOUTH CHARLESTON -- The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources and West Virginia State Parks have announced nine First Day Hikes at West Virginia state parks and natural areas. These free guided hikes, part of a nationwide initiative led by America's State Parks, invite participants of all ages and abilities to explore the natural beauty of West Virginia while learning about park history and wildlife.
Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather, wear appropriate footwear, and bring water and a snack. While trekking poles or a walking stick are helpful, they are not required. Hikers should arrive 10 to 15 minutes before the scheduled time.
"Join us on January 1 and let your adventure begin in one of West Virginia's beautiful state parks and natural areas," said WVDNR Director Brett McMillion. "Happy hiking, and I'm looking forward to a year filled with exploration, appreciation for our great outdoors, and endless adventures in Almost Heaven. These hikes are a fantastic opportunity to start a new tradition with friends and family."
Participating locations include:
Blackwater Falls State Park, 10:30 a.m., beginning at Blackwater Falls Lodge lobby.
Bluestone State Park, 10 a.m. at the Pits parking area, and 1 p.m. at Eagle Point Trail
Cacapon Resort State Park, 10 a.m. at the Nature Center
Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, 1 p.m. at the Cass visitor center
Cedar Creek State Park, 10 a.m., at the barn building near the campground entrance for parking.
Forks of Coal Natural Area, noon, at the Claudia Workman Wildlife Education Center
Kanawha State Forest, 1 p.m., offering several hikes starting from the Forest Headquarters
Pipestem State Park, 1 p.m., meeting at the golf course pro shop
Tygart Lake State Park, 10 a.m., starting from the campground
