Local Chiefs and 49ers fans discuss Sunday’s Super Bowl

LAS VEGAS — It is the biggest sporting event in America. A tradition that fans of the National Football League look forward to watching throughout the entire year. And Sunday will finally be the night to declare an overall winner.

Super Bowl LVIII is set to kickoff with the San Francisco 49ers taking on the Kansas City Chiefs inside Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas at 6:30 p.m. on KDKA-TV, WTRF-TV and Paramount+.

The Apple Music Halftime Show will be headlined by R&B singer Usher.

Missouri may be more than 800 miles from the Ohio Valley and San Francisco, more than 2,500 miles, but that hasn’t deterred local residents from supporting their favorite teams, both of which are vying for that trophy, that ring and the title of champions.

For more than 30 years, Toronto resident Joy Daugherty has been an avid San Francisco fan. She began her love for the team at the age of 7. Why?

“It’s a funny story,” she stated, explaining she thought Joe Montana was “so good looking.”

“He was my very first crush and I have watched and rooted for them ever since,” she said of the former quarterback.

“My favorite player today is George Kittle,” Daugherty said. “I think he is just an all-around great guy, on and off of the field. He’s funny, keeps the team’s morale up and always has fun.”

Thanks to her brother, Greg, she was able to attend her first 49ers game this season, when San Francisco visited Acrisure Stadium to take on the Steelers.

“The win was amazing, but the experience — it was one I’ll never forget,” Daugherty commented. “I never thought I’d say this, but the Pittsburgh fans were great and welcoming, even after the game.”

Daugherty expanded on the meaning behind her comment regarding the Steelers fans, saying, “The reason I said that is because I have always heard terrible stories about how they treat other fans. But that couldn’t have been farther from the truth. We didn’t run into one Steelers fan who gave me a hard time about being a 49ers fan.”

Daugherty’s daughter, Paige, is a Steelers fan, however. Her husband, Garry, roots for the Buffalo Bills while her son, Patrick, is a Green Bay Packers fan.

“Talk about a house divided,” Daugherty joked, adding she is the only San Francisco fan in the family. “I’m the only one,” she said. “We watch San Fran play every week. Sometimes friends and family will come over, but not every week. I do host a party when they make the Super Bowl and I’ll be hosting one this Sunday with family, friends and lots of food and snacks. Bang Bang Niner Gang!”

When asked her favorite piece of memorabilia she possesses, Daugherty replied, “I think my most favorite possession is a 49ers jacket I got from my parents for Christmas back in 1987. I still have it and put it out every time San Fran is in the Super Bowl.” She concluded talking about her love for the team by quoting her favorite player, Kittle, “My mindset: Run through people, but have a good time doing it.”

Growing up in Toronto, J.P. Jones became a fanatic of the San Francisco 49ers at a young age. Now living on state Route 213, he continues to root for the team he has been with since the very beginning.

CHIEFS FAN FOR LIFE — Former Irondale native B.J. Davis will be rooting for his favorite team, the Kansas City Chiefs, during tonight’s Super Bowl game against the San Francisco 49ers. “I first started paying attention to football in the early ’90s when they were winning and transitioning from Montana to Steve Young at quarterback,” Jones said. “I officially started calling them my team around the time they won the Super Bowl against the (San Diego) Chargers back in ’95.”

Jones explained his father is a Cincinnati Bengals and Cincinnati Reds fan, so he was raised to never cheer for the “black and gold.”

“My all-time favorite Niner is Patrick Willis,” Jones continued. “He was the best linebacker amongst one of the best Niners defenses.”

He stated his current favorite player is Kittle because he has an “awesome attitude and is a great blocking tight end, as well as a receiver.

“My wife, Monica, and I went to the season-opener this season to watch them pound the Steelers,” Jones said. “She’s a Steelers fan. The last time I saw them before that was eight years ago when they came to Pittsburgh.”

CHEERING ON THE CHIEFS — Follansbee resident Tamara Hair has supported the Kansas City Chiefs since 1993. She and daughter, who is now 26, showed their love for the team by dressing in team paraphernalia during game days. -- Contributed

“We have four sons,” Jones commented. “Unfortunately, I didn’t get to my oldest in time. He is 13 and a Steelers fan. Our 11-year old, 8-year-old and 6-year-old are all Niners fans. Our son, Nicky, loves defense. His favorite player is Fred Warner. And our son, Mikey, dressed as Brock Purdy for trick-or- treat.”

As for memorabilia, Jones said he doesn’t really have much. He owns a couple of hats, a few shirts and some hoodies. When asked why he doesn’t collect other items, he stated his focus is and always has been about the couples’ children.

“I focus more on my kids and their stuff,” he continued. His children have posters hanging and 49ers’ décor in their rooms as a tribute to their favorite team.

“For watching games, it is just my wife and kids at our house together,” he concluded. “Everyone gets really into the game and wants to pay attention practically the entire time.”

He added it isn’t much of a party watching football with him and his family, so Sundays are reserved for simply J.P., Monica and their boys. They will continue that tradition Sunday evening when they gather in their living room to watch Super Bowl LVIII and eat wings and snacks. Together.

Jones recalled when Jim Harbaugh was the head coach for San Francisco. A memory he will always cherish is when he would steal the team’s family slogan, “Who’s got it better than us?” To which his boys would reply in unison, “Nobody!”

While there are several loyal San Francisco fans, locally, it appears more people will be cheering for a Kansas City victory again this year.

Tamara Hair happens to be one of the Chiefs huge supporters.

It was 1993 when the young Follansbee woman met the man she would later marry.

Jeff Hair was a Chiefs fan when he met his future wife. She stated she figured she would “go with the flow” and followed suit, liking the team’s red and yellow colors.

When asked her favorite player of all time, without hesitation she instantly commented Tony Gonzalez.

“I was, and still am head over heels for him,” Tamara said. The team she has supported for 31 years has played a role in gift-giving merchandise on special days of the year. In October of 2015, she surprised Jeff with tickets to the Steelers vs. Chiefs game at Arrowhead Stadium for their anniversary.

“Everyone thought it was great that we drove from the Pittsburgh area to Arrowhead to watch the Chiefs beat the Steelers,” she said of the experience.

The couple has taken photos throughout the years where they are wearing their Kansas City merchandise. There is even one picture where Tamara is holding her baby daughter, who is now 26, where both mother and child are adorned in Chiefs clothing. Their favorite piece of Kansas City paraphernalia is the replica Super Bowl ring Tamara’s mom bought the couple for Christmas, right before she died.

She stated her next favorite piece of merchandise is her autographed Kelce jersey Jeff got her for her birthday.

The family usually doesn’t have company over to watch the Chiefs play because, according to Tamara, “It gets serious in our house when they are playing.”

“We are both crazy fans, which has made our two daughters become Chiefs fans, too, but my son was and still is a loyal (Baltimore) Ravens fan for the past 13 years. And boy was the AFC Championship game a tough one this year.”

Irondale native B.J. Davis is another area resident who will be cheering on the Chiefs Sunday evening, as well. The Highlandtown resident who currently lives outside of Wellsville has loved Kansas City football since the late ’80s when Marty Schottenheimer left Cleveland to became the Chiefs’ head coach.

“My all-time favorite player, Derrick Thomas, was from that same time period,” he commented. “He played linebacker and was a beast on the field. He was just fun to watch. Although I have never been to Arrowhead stadium to see the Chiefs play, I have had the opportunity to watch them twice in Cleveland and once in Pittsburgh. Until me, nobody in my family was ever a Chiefs fan and growing up around here, I really never met any.”

His exposure to the Chiefs first came from the family of his best friend growing up.

“He had an older brother who moved to Kansas City when we were younger,” Davis reflected.

He possesses tons of memorabilia including hats and jerseys. His favorite, however, is a collection of replica Super Bowl rings.

Becky Priscilla counts herself a huge fan of Kansas City.

“I was born and raised in the Kansas City Metropolitan area,” Priscilla began.

“Every Sunday during football season, my mother would get up, make food that we could get and eat when we wanted, and we would all gather around and watch Chiefs’ football,” she reflected. “I have been a fan for as long as I can remember and it hasn’t always been easy.”

Gonzalez will always remain one of her favorite players, she stated. “And of course, (Patrick) Mahomes and (Travis) Kelce are way up there, too. But currently, my favorite player is running back Isiah Pacheco. He is so much fun to watch. They say he runs like he is mad at the ground. Andy Reid said they nicknamed him the ‘Energizer Bunny,’ and this fits. He seems to give 100 percent all of the time and seems to be so happy to be in the situation he is in.”

Priscilla explained she comes from a large family — most still residing in Missouri. The majority are Chiefs fans, she said.

“My husband, John, is a Chiefs fan — as long as they are not playing the Vikings,” she laughed. “I am the bigger Chiefs fan.”

She noted she has attended a couple of Chiefs games at Arrowhead Stadium.

Her current profile picture on Facebook shows she and her husband attending one of those games in their Kansas City garb.

While Priscilla enjoys attending live football games, she doesn’t like to go when they are playing in an opposing stadium, as it makes it more difficult to attend the games and root for her lifelong favorite.

Priscilla stated she owns a few jerseys her family and friends have given to her as gifts; beer taps from Bradford Exchange, which come in installments — a gift from her daughter; and her favorite item of all, a Super Bowl table game.

The Chiefs are positioned in one end zone and the Vikings in the other. The game from long ago is from Super Bowl IV, when her favorite team battled against her future husband’s favorite team to compete for the title.

She is still in possession of the sports section from the Herald-Star when the Chiefs won Super Bowl 54. An item she simply could not throw away.

“I hang it up when they play in the Super Bowl so it will be up Sunday,” she said. The newspaper will hang in their Stratton home’s man cave, where the couple will watch with a few of their close friends … and of course, food. “I prefer to watch the game at home with family and a few close friends,” she cited. “There are less distractions that way. My husband has decorated the man cave with both Chiefs and Vikings memorabilia.”

“I said before that it’s hasn’t always been easy to be a Chiefs fan,” Priscilla concluded. “It took them 50 years after their first Super Bowl win to get back to the big game, but the last six or seven years have been great. I realize that most people, unless they are Chiefs fans, are getting tired of them. But I am going to enjoy it while I can. Go Chiefs!”
