New Cumberland offices to move this weekend

NEW CUMBERLAND - The New Cumberland city offices will be on the move at the end of the week.
City council convened for its regular session Monday - the final meeting in the current city building on North Court Street - announcing city offices will be closed Friday, with the official move taking place Saturday.
City Clerk Tammy Jenkins explained the closure Friday was to allow for phones, internet and other services to be transferred to the new offices on River Avenue.
"We can't be open for business," Jenkins said.
Jenkins reported there are still a few items of preparation remaining for the new city building's interior, with the hope of them being completed in the coming days.
In related matters, council approved a proposal for $6,500 for exterior painting of the new city building, and $6,000 for rear decking.
Councilman Mike Watkins, though, said those aspects won't affect the move into the new offices.
"That's work they can do after we're already in the new building," he said.
The new city building, also referred to as the Ewing Building, is located next door to the old city building, for which council agreed Monday to a $8,000 contract to install new shingles on the roof. Mayor Will White and Jenkins noted the company - identified as Shamrock - had a positive track record of previous work for the city.
Responding to questions from members of council, City Solicitor Kevin Pearl said there would not be a need to send the project out for bid, citing a $25,000 threshold.
Council also agreed to seek estimates for repairs at the municipal garage.
New Cumberland Council authorized the appraisal and sale of the current city building in July, after officials had noted on numerous occasions the cost of maintaining the building. A successful auction was held in March, with Miquel Angel Charneco Jr., of Tampa, Fla., placing the bid of $120,000.
