WEIRTON -- The community will be going for the gold as part of its celebrations of the Independence Day holiday.

The Weirton Board of Parks and Recreation currently is organizing the city's Independence Day parade, which will be held on July 6.

This year's theme is "We're Back in Championship Form," with the parade set to kick off at 10 a.m., following its traditional route along Main Street.

Officials are encouraging area businesses, school groups, athletic teams, organizations and more to consider participating.

"It's a great way to showcase community spirit," noted Parks Executive Director Coty Shingle.

Applications are available at the Millsop Community Center and will be accepted through June 26.

On the day of the parade, participants are being asked to check in no later than 9 a.m. at the intersection of Virginia Avenue and Main Street.
