WEIRTON -- Finishing touches are being made on the community's first observance of Disability Independence Day, which will feature multiple activities kicking off Monday.

For the past several weeks, a committee of residents and local officials has been working to find ways to recognize Disability Independence Day - designated nationally on July 26 - crafting a week of events both to raise awareness and provide inclusion.

"That's why we're sitting here," said Jonathan Curenton, who initially brought up the idea and approached city officials and representatives of local businesses.

Observances will begin Monday with a book and art exhibit, highlighting work of those living with disabilities, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Mary H. Weir Public Library.

Library Director Rik Rekowski explained easels will be set up to display various pieces of artwork, with exhibits also on hand to showcase local resources available for those with disabilities.

"That will be distributed and on display on the main floor," Rekowski said.

The exhibit will be followed up by a charity basketball game at 5 p.m., July 23 at the Millsop Communnity Center, and a charity football game at 5 p.m., July 24 on Bowman Field. Both games will feature athletes with Hancock County Special Olympics facing off against representatives of City of Weirton police and fire departments.

The week will be capped off on July 26 with a VIP event from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Weirton Event Center, prior to that night's free community concert.

"We'll have a small ceremony," Assistant City Manager DeeAnn Pulliam said, noting festivities will include a meal and other refreshments, prize drawings and more. "I think it will be a great night and a lot of fun."

According to Pulliam, the committee has received support, to date, from the Weirton Woman's Club, the Knights of Columbus in Weirton, Weirton Medical Center, Basil's Sports Bar and Grill, DeeJay's BBQ Ribs and Grille, Tudor's Biscuit World and Giometti's Catering.

A mayoral proclamation will be delivered, Pulliam explained, and those in attendance will have an opportunity to discuss how disabilities have affected their lives.

"We've done a lot of planning," Pulliam said. "I think this will be a positive thing for our community."
