Co-defendant in Newell underage sales case has another court date

NEW CUMBERLAND — The second defendant in a felony case in relation to alleged underage sales of products with high THC levels at a Newell convenience store has another court date.

Abdulrashid Alhawshabi, who owns Phillies Quick Stop, located at 106 Washington St., is scheduled to appear at 9:40 a.m. Nov. 14, before Magistrate Ralph Fletcher on two counts of possessing a Schedule I or II controlled substance with the intent to deliver.

He has remained out on $40,000 property/surety bond.

Co-defendant Hamdan Alhawshabi, who has managed the store, took a plea deal to a lesser charge last week, which resulted in a $100 fine, court costs, a suspended jail sentence and placement on unsupervised probation for one year.

The store manager also had to agree to a prohibition from selling any CBD and THC products, and had to promise to check IDs to make sure customers buying tobacco, lottery tickets, and alcoholic beverages are legally permitted to do so in the State of West Virginia before selling to them.
