FOLLANSBEE — Families seeking Halloween fun but wanting an alternative to spookhouses are invited to try the assortment of interactive activities and dramatic presentations offered by the Khymira Dilirium Theatre.
Produced by the creators and actors behind Khymira Entertainment, a community theater group, the attraction will be open from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. each Saturday and 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. each Sunday this month at the Bluewave Center, formerly Follansbee Middle School at 1400 Main St.
The group has used a variety of special effects and technology, including virtual reality, to create several stations and dramatic presentations geared for different ages.
Under the direction of a KE member, visitors can take part in a fast-paced video using the green screen video technique employed in many movies as well as television weather forecasts.
The KE crew will e-mail the finished videos to their participants. There’s also a photo booth, where guests can choose from a variety of spooky backgrounds to create a scene that also will be e-mailed to them.
Older visitors can try solving a computer-guided mystery involving Egyptian mythology.
And guests of all ages can play one of KE’s original video games, displayed on table- or wall-size screens, using conventional joysticks or simply the motion of their own arms.
They also may have a seat and watch assorted spooky or humorous videos featuring actors from KE or the Striplight Community Theater, its partner in the endeavor.
Ruth Comley, one of the event’s creators, said the actors have found it interesting and fun to perform monologues and sketches incorporating various special effects.
As host, Sam Kiser invites guests to participate in a Halloween trivia contest or karaoke inspired by the holiday.
In conjunction with the event, Striplight Community Theatre will present a live one-act play, “The Things That Went Bump in the Night” at 7 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday.
Admission to the Khymira Dilirium Theatre is $10 for students and $15 for adults.
Amy Balog of Striplight Community Theatre, said there also are plans for a similar event with a Christmas theme and assorted vendors on Nov. 30 in observance of Small Business Saturday.
Vendors interested in participating should call (412) 337-8812.
The theater, which takes its name from the local steel industry, will present “The Redemption of Sir Nikolas,” a Christmas play set in the Middle Ages, on Dec. 5-7 and 13-15 at the Bluewave Center.
Members of the Stage and Steel group are involved in the production, so attendees can expect some swordplay action.
