Raising awareness

The City of Weirton continued its efforts to recognize the service and sacrifice of area veterans Tuesday, with a ceremony marking October as Agent Orange Awareness Month. In particular, officials presented a proclamation honoring the service of Vietnam veteran Harold D. Wolverton, a Purple Heart recipient who has been affected from exposure to Agent Orange. Gifts also were presented to several of the veterans in attendance. Agent Orange was the name given to a chemical herbicide used by the U.S. military to control vegetation during the Vietnam War. Exposure to the chemical has been traced to numerous health issues in the years since.
