Weirton Council to begin budget discussions
WEIRTON — Weirton Council is set to begin the planning for the city’s 2025-26 budgets.
A workshop has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday in the council chambers of the Weirton Municipal Building, with an agenda of discussion on the proposed fiscal year 2025-2026 general fund budget.
The workshop, which is open to the public, is expected to be the first of a series of discussions on the budget, which must be approved by council and submitted to the state by the end of March.
“I would like to get in a minimum of two workshops; maybe three,” explained Finance Director Diana Smoljanovich during Friday’s meeting of the city’s Finance Committee.
Funding submissions from each area of the city, along with any capital improvements, programs, or vehicle and equipment purchases have been submitted as part of the process.
“I send out a request to all the department heads, the Park Board and the library,” Smoljanovich said, noting those responses assist her in establishing a preliminary framework for the budget.
Smoljanovich also uses the current fiscal year’s budget, along with anticipated revenue, comparing them with all of the proposals to assist council in determining what is to be funded.
Wednesday’s workshop is scheduled for two hours, with City Manager Mike Adams explaining they try not to overload council with information.
“We try to set a time limit,” Adams said, noting each of the workshops will be set up to discuss certain departments.
The 2025-2026 fiscal year begins July 1.
