Deputies respond to shooting incidents

NEW CUMBERLAND – Hancock County sheriff’s deputies responded to two shooting-related incidents in the county Monday.

Deputies were called to Newell Monday morning in relation to a domestic dispute between brothers Richard Nixon, 49, and Christopher Nixon, 45, at their residence on Grant Street. According to reports from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Richard Nixon called 911 at approximately 9:20 a.m., reporting he had shot at Christopher Nixon after Christopher Nixon allegedly “came after him in a threatening manner.”

Christopher Nixon left the residence on foot.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found Richard Nixon waiting for them, unarmed, and he was taken into custody. Christopher Nixon, meanwhile, was located a short distance away, where he was assessed by emergency medical services and it was determined the bullet grazed his leg, but caused no serious injury.

A search warrant was obtained, with the investigation recovering a handgun, one spent casing, and the bullet from inside the residence.

Richard Nixon has been charged with attempted malicious wounding, wanton endangerment with a firearm, and domestic battery, while Christopher Nixon has been charged with domestic assault.

Shortly after 2 p.m., deputies were called to a second shooting incident on Rural Lane in Lawrenceville, with a resident reporting her daughter’s ex-boyfriend had come to the residence and fired several rounds before fleeing.

The investigation, assisted by law enforcement in Chester, East Liverpool, and St. Clair Township, provided information of the suspect fleeing into Ohio, where he allegedly discarded the firearm, identified as an AR-15 rifle, at the residence of an unrelated individual.

Deputies processing the scene on Rural Lane determined three rounds were discharged into a hillside adjacent to the house.

No one was injured in the second incident, and the investigation is still pending.
