Brooke Hills Park to celebrate National Kids Day

WELLSBURG — Area families looking to cool off and enjoy some fun together are invited to Brooke Hills Park from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday for its annual observance of National Kids Day.

The park’s swimming pool again will be the center of activities, including the Duck Boat Challenge and the yearly Duck Pluck, in which numbered, plastic ducks will be pulled from the water to determine the winners of many prizes.

Chances for the Duck Pluck may be purchased online through the Events link at brookehillspark.com, at the park’s clubhouse prior to the event or during the event.

They are $3 each, two for $5, three for $8, four for $10, five for $13, six for $15, seven for $18, eight for $20 and 10 for $25.

Various businesses and the park itself have provided prizes for the drawings. Among them are cash prizes of $150 and $100 and a family pool pass and a golf pass to the park for next year.

Janice McFadden, the park’s manager, said anywhere between 300 and 500 ducks have been emptied into the pool in the past.

Plastic ducks also play a part in the Duck Boat Challenge, a contest in which youth and adult family members are tasked with creating small watercraft using cardboard or other household items of their choice.

Multiple ducks are placed on each boat to determine which are the sturdiest, with prizes going to the winners for two age groups: age 8 and under and ages 9-15.

The most recent winner’s boat held 110 ducks.

The boats may be no more than 6 inches by 8 inches.

During the hours of the event, visitors to the park will be able to use the pool, when it’s not in use for the contests, and splash pad free of charge.

Disc jockey G-Con will be providing music.

The park also will be holding two other events in August: The End of the Summer Barbecue, for adults only, on Aug. 15 and a night golf scramble on Aug. 23.

The Riversmoke BBQ food truck will be providing food for the first event, which also will include music by a disc jockey. It’s slated to be held at the pool if it doesn’t rain or at a park shelter if it does.

The cost is $25 per person and $40 per couple. Those interested in attending should register by Aug. 8 through the above website or in person at the park’s clubhouse.

The golf scramble is open to 18 two-player teams, who will set out on the park’s 18-hole golf course following a shotgun start at 6 p.m.

The cost is $65 per person, which includes dinner, with other details to be announced.

Teams for the event often are filled quickly, so those who enjoy night golfing are encouraged to register soon through the same channels.

Located at 140 Gist Lane, off state Route 27, the park also includes a miniature golf course, playground, multiple shelters and Brooke Hills Playhouse, which will be presenting “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” at 8 p.m. Aug. 1, 2, 8 and 9 and 2 p.m. Aug. 3 and 10.

Tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for senior citizens and students and $10 for children. Reservations may be made by calling (304) 737-3344.

As many lifeguards return to school and related activities, the pool is expected to close after Aug. 10.

Until then, it’s set to be open from noon to 7 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.

To raise funds, the park will be holding King of Clubs drawings each Tuesday night beginning July 29.

Chances are sold for the drawings, with the winners determined through the selection of cards from a standard deck of cards.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. for the drawings, which will occur at 8 p.m. at the park’s Bald Eagle Shelter.

Rules for the drawings can be found on the park’s website.
