CHESTER -- Chester Council accepted $81,492.86 into the general fund and paid $277,593.49 in bills, including in excess of $90,000 for the remodeling of four bathrooms within the municipal building.
During Monday's meeting, members also accepted $5,670 in receipts into the building fund for rentals and paid $1,914.93 in bills for the building's upkeep outside of the bathroom repairs.
During his report, Mayor Ed Wedgewood said that after he and Councilmember Steve Shuman, who also serves as road foreman, measured how much concrete was needed for the 2025 paving program. A bid was put out. Bids will be opened during a special meeting scheduled for July 18.
The city also has been in touch with ProTech of East Liverpool, which was evaluating the city's needs for new light poles in the downtown area.
Much discussion over the past several years had surrounded Chester's lack of electric outlets on the pole, so city officials could upgrade Christmas decorations.
Shuman said ProTech is incorporating outlets on the poles in their quote.
Shuman also reminded residents that it is illegal to blow their grass clippings and other yard debris into the streets, which is causing flooding. As head of the streets, visitors using the Chester City Park also were informed there is an improved fire lane designation in front of the Badgley Pavilion. Drivers of parked vehicles are asked to refrain from parking in the now marked area as it impedes access for emergency vehicles.
Council members also voted:
• To keep uniform allowances the same for street employees ($450 per year) and police officers ($800 per year).
• Renew their annual maintenance agreement for their large printer at $360.
• Pay $670 for their per capita share membership in the Brooke Hancock Jefferson Planning Commission.
• Renew their annual $100 membership in the Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau.
• Pay their annual dues of $35 for their West Virginia Municipal Clerks and Recorders Association.
