Sean Blumette selected as new Weir High principal
NEW CUMBERLAND — A familiar face will be taking the reins at Weir High School for the upcoming school year.
During their regular meeting Monday, members of the Hancock County Board of Education approved Superintendent Dan Enich’s recommendation to hire Sean Blumette as Weir High’s next head principal.
The 4-1 vote – with member Jim Horstman casting the lone vote against – followed a 41-minute executive session.
According to Enich and Assistant Superintendent Dave Smith, nine individuals applied for the position – with five being candidates from within the school district and four from outside.
“We interviewed six,” Enich said.
Enich said it was Blumette’s experience which helped to give him the edge over the other candidates.
“He’s very experienced. He’s very educated. He’s proven himself to be a good leader,” Enich said, pointing to Blumette’s 25 years in education.
Blumette, who currently works as the high school’s athletic director and dean of students, will be taking over for Ted Arneault, who recently was approved to serve in the newly created post of coordinator of transportation.
Prior to coming to Weir High in 2024, Blumette served as athletic director in Brooke County Schools from 2015 to 2023, and also had been an assistant principal in the same system from 2014 to 2017 and from 2020 to 2024.
He also has coaching experience, serving as a head football coach on the high school level, and an assistant coach at the collegiate level while at Waynesburg University for both football and women’s lacrosse, where he also worked as a lecturer.
Blumette also has been maintenance director, and substitute teacher and athletic contest manager, and assistant football coach at Serra Catholic High School in McKeesport, and an assistant principal and K-5 educational technology instructor at St. James School in Wilkinsburg. Other positions have been held within the Steel Valley School District in Munhall, Pa., the Duquesne City School District, Franklin Regional School District in Murraysville, Gateway School District in Monroeville, and Geibel Catholic High School in Connellsville, Pa.
He has earned degrees from California University of Pennsylvania and Gannon University, along with a variety of certifications.
