Weirton event series ready for final three weeks
WEIRTON — After a week’s respite, Weirton’s summer event series will feature three more activities to close out its season.
Organized by the City of Weirton, with support from the Weirton Board of Parks and Recreation and the Weirton Festival Committee, the event series returns Friday with a performance by Let’s Groove Tonight – an Earth, Wind and Fire tribute group – at the Weirton Event Center.
Gates open at 6 p.m., with the concert beginning at 7 p.m.
“We’re really excited about Let’s Groove Tonight,” said Coty Shingle, executive director of Weirton Parks and a member of the Weirton Festival Committee. “This has been the most anticipated concert of the series.”
Scheduled food offerings for the night will be provided by Krooked Kitchen and Tate’s Teas.
In addition, as part of the local observances of Disability Independence Week, the 50/50 drawing will benefit Special Olympics.
The series will feature its final concert of the season on Aug. 1, with a gospel night, with gates opening at 5:30 p.m., and music beginning at 6:30 p.m.
For the gospel night, music will be provided by the Weirton Ecumenical Choir, Family of God, Crossroads North River, and Refocus Christian Church.
“It’s a chance for people to come together and celebrate their faith,” Shingle said, explaining the evening had been a request by supporters of this year’s series.
The event series will conclude Aug. 8 with the Brooke Hancock Backpack Resource Fair.
Organized through the Brooke Hancock Family Resource Network, the resource fair will include giveaways of school supplies, as well as various resource vendors from the community, car seat safety checks, and free refreshments.
The evening will conclude with a screening of “A Minecraft Movie,” beginning at 9 p.m.
