Zoning Board workshop to focus on timbering proposal

WEIRTON — The Weirton Zoning Board of Appeals has scheduled a work session to allow further discussion on a timbering project proposed for close to 40 acres off of Marland Heights.

As part of its regular meeting earlier this month, board members tabled a request by Trumco Forest Products, on behalf of Barone Realty Co., for the timbering of approximately 37 acres located between Marland Heights and Freedom Way.

The work session will take place from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, in the Weirton Room of the Millsop Community Center.

Trumco owner Luke Benson, during the regular Zoning Board meeting July 1, explained if the request is approved, the plan is to gain access to the property by Gullette Lane, targeting mature trees of at least 20 inches in diameter, with a particular focus on species such as maple, red oak, hickory, and black cherry.

Approximately 25 city residents attended the board’s meeting, many expressing concerns about potential effects to the land set to be timbered, as well as any impact the project may have for their homes.

Several pointed to the possibility of erosion once the trees are removed, citing the existence of several streams and springs in the area, while others questioned potential impact on wildlife and whether surveys or ecological assessments had been performed.

Some also questioned whether the timbering could lead to future development.

As the meeting is scheduled as a work session, no vote can be taken.

The proposal is expected to be up for action as part of the Zoning Board’s next regular meeting on Aug. 5.
