Alatis, Kirlangitis named Weir High team doctors

WEIRTON — Two area medical professionals have been designated as the official team doctors for Weir High School athletics.

As part of a special meeting held Thursday, the Hancock County Board of Education agreed to name Dr. Stephen Alatis and Dr. John Kirlangitis as team doctors for Weir High athletic events.

Superintendent of Schools Dan Enich noted while there are trainers available in many instances for the student athletes in Hancock County Schools, Alatis and Kirlangitis will be established as the ones to provide treatment for Weir High athletes.

“They are the go-to people, along with the trainers,” Enich said, noting students could be treated by other providers in Alatis’ and Kirlangitis’ offices.

Typically, team doctors for high schools are doctors who volunteer to oversee medical care for student-athletes, performing pre-participation physicals, providing sideline care during events, and coordinating with athletic trainers and other specialists for injury prevention and management.

Athletic events are held throughout the year on the high school and middle school levels. Enich said Oak Glen High also has designated team doctors.

“We have numerous athletic events,” Enich said, explaining the majority of the time such treatment is needed for football and basketball players.

Alatis is an orthopedic surgeon with offices in Weirton and Steubenville. He is on staff at WVU Medicine Weirton Medical Center. Kirlangitis is a physical therapist and owner of Mainstream Physical Therapy.
