WELLSBURG — Since it was revived in 2002, the Brooke County Fair has offered a weekend chock full of things to see and do, and this year will see the addition of drag races for all-terrain vehicles and dirt bikes, presentations of Native American culture and lumberjack skills and chances to enter home grown produce and other food into several contests.
Held at Brooke Hills Park, the fair will be held from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
Admission, which includes carnival rides, is $5 on Friday and $10 on Saturday and Sunday.
A demolition derby, a popular attraction through the years, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, with registration at noon, and will be joined by drag races for all-terrain vehicles and dirt bikes to be held at 1 p.m. that day, with registration at 11 a.m.
The fair has included many contests, with a highlight being a tug of war tournament between pupils from the county’s primary and intermediate schools. Teams from Jefferson and Franklin intemediate schools will face each other at noon, while Hooverson Heights and Wellsburg primary schools will compete at 2 p.m.
There also will be mud volleyball matches for students from Brooke Middle School and Brooke High School at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
Girls and boys of various ages are invited to enter the Brooke County Fair Queen of Queens Pageant, which will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. Those interested should pre-register by calling Shirlie Rogers, its coordinator, at (304) 919-9318.
In recent years, local farmers have made an effort to include more agriculture into the annual event, bringing a barnyard zoo and a children’s pedal pull tractor competition to the park.
And this year, organizers of the Brooke County Farmers Market are stepping it up by holding contests in which area residents can enter their home-grown produce and home-made baked goods, jams, jellies and honey.
Tia Graham, the market’s coordinator, said categories include assorted breads, cookies, cakes, pastries, two-crust pies, cobblers, jellies, preserves, butters, jams, eggs, raw and canned produce, honey, syrup and bee-related products.
There also will be a Mr. Potato Head contest in which children can dress or decorate a real potato in various ways.
Except for that contest, there will be a $1 fee for each entry, with contestants competing for ribbons and prizes of $5, $3 and $2 for first, second and third place, respectively.
Ribbons only will be awarded for the Mr. Potato Head contest.
Participants should bring their entries to the agriculture department’s tent between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Friday.
Judging will be done at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the baked goods to be sold through an auction benefiting the fair at noon.
Rules and entry forms for the various contests can be found at brookecountyfair.com.
The fair will include a variety of demonstrations and entertainment.

It will be held 1 p.m., with registration at 12:30 p.m.
Disc jockey Jack Carbasho will be playing music and leading karaoke through the weekend.
Leaders and youth in the Brooke County 4-H program are regulars at the fair and will be displaying their projects and offering free activities and produce for children as well as holding a pet show, for ages 17 and under, at 1 p.m. Sunday.
