Budget revision recommended by city council’s finance panel
WEIRTON – Weirton Council will be asked to consider its third revision to the city’s 2025-26 fiscal budget during its meeting Monday, with the proposal receiving a recommendation from the Weirton Finance Committee Friday.
As part of the revisions, the General Government section of the budget will see a decrease of $434,775, leaving it with $350,225.
Those funds will be reallocated to other areas of the budget, with $120,000 going to the Weirton Fire Department and $314,775 going to Public Transit.
Finance Director Diana Smoljanovich explained Friday the Fire Department’s new funding will go toward the purchase of previously approved equipment.
An additional $30,000 already held by the department for use in support of its established volunteer division also will go toward the purchase.
“We are going to pay for some of it through the volunteer fund,” Smoljanovich said.
The revision will provide the fire department with a budget for the year of $4,487,809.
The adjustment to the Transit funds, meanwhile, are part of efforts to meet state and federal requirements, with Smoljanovich noting an entirely new account for the Weirton Transit Department will have to be established, separate from the city’s general fund.
“We are not supposed to intermix transit funds,” she said. “Every penny that comes in for transit can only be used for transit.”
Transit Director Kevin Davis, who oversees the service now known as Weirton Ride, explained, while it is a full department of the city, this allows better monitoring of the finances by the Federal Transit Administration and the West Virginia Department of Transportation, both of which provides funding to the service.
“We’re not allowed to make a profit,” Davis noted.
This will revise the Public Transit portion of the budget to $834,570 for the year.
In addition to the budget revision, the Finance Committee recommended a resolution authorizing the emergency purchase – at a cost of $12,821.25 – for the repair of the rear differential of the Weirton Fire Department’s first due ladder truck.
Both items will go before Weirton Council during its meeting at 7 p.m. Monday.
