Chester Council pays $250K in bills during meeting

CHESTER — City council paid just under $250,000 worth of bills during Monday’s regular meeting.

Clerk Tara Ayers explained there were several larger bills that needed paid out of the general fund, including payment to the state Auditor’s Office for completing the city’s 2014, 2015 and 2016 audits at a cost of $33,000.

Council also accepted $114,371.16 in receipts into the general fund and $6,260 into the building fund, while paying $926.30 worth of bills from the building fund.

Other action items included a $1,500 donation to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Reserves, which provides traffic control for Chester’s special events like Teapot Day and the Fourth of July.

After a bid from Protech of East Liverpool to replace the city’s street lights came back higher than expected, council took no action on the $330,000 bid, instead electing to obtain additional bids.

The bid included 72 light poles and an additional dozen surplus poles in case backups were needed plus all the electrical work, Mayor Ed Wedgewood explained.

In other action, council also decided to add two more lines to the cell phone plan for the city park cameras.

The next regular council meeting is set for 5 p.m., Oct. 6 in council chambers.
