New Weir basketball coach named

NEW CUMBERLAND — The Hancock County Board of Education, again, named a new head boys basketball coach for Weir High School, although the previously selected candidate appeared before the board Monday to seek clarification.

By a 3-2 vote, the school board, during its meeting Monday, approved Jason Angle as the new head boys basketball coach for the Red Riders. Board Vice President Ed Fields, and members Jim Horstman and Randy Swartzmiller voted in favor of Angle, while board President Chris Gillette and member Jack Crow voted against the selection.

Angle had been named as an assistant coach at Weir Middle earlier this month.

This is the second time this year the board has selected a head coach.

In June, members voted 4-0, with Horstman recusing himself, in favor of T.J. Haught serving in the post. Horstman stated at the time he had not taken part in the vote because his son had been a candidate for the coaching position.

Haught attended Monday’s board meeting, seeking to speak with board members about the situation. The board gave Haught the option of meeting in private, which he requested, with the board going into executive session for 11 minutes at the beginning of the meeting.

Following the board’s meeting, Haught explained while he had been initially selected as coach, a grievance was filed and the board re-posted the position.

“They re-interviewed and came to a different conclusion,” Haught said, indicating he still had some questions about the process.

Superintendent Dan Enich noted there was little he was able to say about the situation.

“The basketball position has been an ongoing experience,” Enich said, explaining the board followed advice from its legal counsel in re-advertising the position.

Haught had been approved to serve as an assistant coach at Weir High during the board’s Sept. 8 meeting.

The executive session with Haught was one of three held during Monday’s meeting, with the second lasting 80 minutes to discuss potential litigation, and a third for a student disciplinary hearing.
