Storybook Night First Friday theme

STEUBENVILLE — Friday’s First Friday on Fourth is designed to bring out the kid in all of us, organizers say.

“It’s our second-to-last First Friday for the season, but I think it will be the best,” Marc Barnes of the Harmonium Project said while discussing this month’s theme, Storybook Night. “It’s got a few things I really love–staff members from the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County are building a giant pallet castle for kids to play in, they’re calling it the ‘Enchanted Library.’ There will also be a maze made out of pallets, and each room will have a different scene from a different book.”

He said there will also be a fire-breather — a street performer who does fire juggling, fire breathing “and a lot of throwing torches back and forth,” as well as sword fighters who “will be doing sword fighting demonstrations in the Market Street intersection.” And if that’s not enough, festival-goers are invited to “dress up as their favorite story book character.”

“But it kind of ends up feeling like a Renaissance fair,” he said. “With people dressing up, you end up with lots of Robin Hoods, Peter Pans and dragons. Having them wandering downtown is fun enough, but when you add the sword fighting and fire-breathing and musicians in the street, it starts to look like another time.”

And if that’s not enough there will be a bouncy house and lots of food options, “basically any kind of dinner you want will probably be on Fourth Street,” he said, as well as vendors and six bands.

“It’s really one of my favorite First Fridays,” Barnes said. “I think one of the things First Fridays brings is a sense of magic and spectacle, something you haven’t seen before, and I think for everyone, kids especially, seeing these entertainers downtown is something they’ve never seen.”

Barnes said Friday’s weather forecast is looking good, too.

“We start at 6 p.m. and continue until 11 p.m.,” he said. “If anyone wants to volunteer we meet downtown around 1 p.m. to start setting up.”

The entertainment lineup includes:

• Fourth Street Stage: Acaciawood, 6 p.m.; Ben Reneer, 7:45 p.m.; and Ben-David Warner Band, 9:45 p.m.

• Market Street Stage: Matt Hill & Friends, 6 p.m.; the Chairman Dances, 7:20 p.m.; and Harrison Lemke, 8:20 p.m.

• Market Street Intersection: The Fire Felon fire breathing, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.; swordfighting demonstrations, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

• PLSJC’s Enchanted Library will be in the green space for kids to play at from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

This year’s season of the monthly street festival will conclude Oct. 3, when the theme will be Oktoberfest.
