Walk to raise awareness of childhood cancer and leukemia
WEIRTON — September is recognized as both Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and Leukemia Awareness Month.
Inspired by the battles of those who have faced the medical conditions, Weirton resident Noreen Saxon is organizing a walk both to raise awareness and funds in support.
“A lot of people are not aware of how much cancer has affected the community,” Saxon said.
Set for Oct. 5, the walk will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the Panhandle Trail, beginning at the Harmon Creek trail station. There is no cost to participate, and Saxon noted those wishing to participate may walk at any point during the three-hour period.
Awareness ribbons and bracelets will be available for purchase during the event, as well as leading up to the walk at R.E. Saxon Jeweler, Mario’s Restaurant, Best You Boutique, and the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce, for $2 each.
Saxon noted proceeds from the purchase of the items will be donated to WVU Medicine Weirton Medical Center in an effort to support cancer treatment locally.
“It’s not just Pittsburgh. It’s not just Morgantown,” she said.
With support from the City of Weirton and others in the community, information is being distributed to local schools, churches and other businesses to gain interest, with all area residents invited to participate.
“Hopefully, anyone who has been touched by leukemia and childhood cancer will walk,” Saxon said, adding she would like to see many area youth decide to take part.
Arrangements are being made for free handouts for children, with refreshments also in the works for everyone.
Those wishing to participate also are encouraged to wear either orange – to mark leukemia awareness – or gold – to denote childhood cancer awareness.
