Trick-or-treat events rescheduled

STEUBENVILLE — Heavy rain forecast for Thursday has led local communities to reschedule their Halloween trick-or-treat activities.

Officials in Steubenville, Weirton and Wintersville said their events have been moved to 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Brooke County officials have moved trick-or-treating to 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday for unincorporated areas of the county, while Follansbee also has moved it to those hours on Saturday.

Beech Bottom officials have announced treats will be dispensed at the Beech Bottom fire station from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, and residents also can bring treats to dispense at that location.

Student struck by a car

A Hills Elementary student escaped serious injury Monday after being struck by a car in the student drop-off zone at Hills Elementary School in Mingo Junction.

Police Chief Willie McKenzie said it appears the child got out on the passenger side “and went to go around (her) mother’s car to get to school and her mother accidentally ran her over.”

“The child does not have any broken bones or anything major,” he said. “She does have some brush burns from the ground.”

He said there are a few things they still need to do, including reviewing surveillance footage, to verify witness accounts before they close the investigation.

“I thought it was going to be much worse when I heard the call come, thank God it wasn’t,” he said. “And I didn’t expect it to be the mother’s car.”

McKenzie said the child was around 9 years old.
