Security upgrades coming to New Cumberland City Building

NEW CUMBERLAND — City Council is moving forward with plans to increase security measures at the New Cumberland City Building.

A series of long-discussed improvements was discussed during Monday’s council meeting, with members agreeing to approve the lone proposal for the projects at the building located at 204 North River Ave.

“We received one bid and one bid only,” explained City Clerk Tammy Jenkins.

Tri-State Glass offered a bid totaling $33,761 for the projects, which include the installation of bullet-resistant aluminum doors, bullet-resistant windows, fiberglass panels, a deal tray to provide a barrier between employees and the public, and impact film on exterior doors and windows, and other additions.

While a brief debate was held as to whether to accept the full bid as it was presented, or do the upgrades in phases, it was decided to move ahead with the entire package as received.

The decision was advocated by Police Chief Lester Skinner, who noted the importance of improving the building’s security for the city employees.

“As chief, I feel the need to move forward as quickly as we can,” Skinner said.

Council began informal discussions on the possibly security upgrades in March and April, seeking specifications and proposals in the months since. A formal bid was advertised in September with the deadline shortly before Monday’s council meeting.

While there was some concern about the city receiving only one bid, Skinner noted the process was followed and other companies had the same opportunity.

“We advertised and gave them a chance,” Skinner said.

City officials previously had discussed the inclusion of electronic door locks and security cameras for the building.

Other improvement projects discussed Monday for city facilities, included a decision to provide $1,500 to assist with updates to the Hines Park Gazebo, and $2,100 for shelving for the storage room of the Jefferson Street Event Hall, which once had served as the city building.

“I’d like to get it done before winter,” Mayor Will White said.

Council also approved a bid of $19,683 for a proposal to refinish the back patio and front parking area along the city building.
