Whooping cough case is reported

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Health Department has reported a confirmed case of pertussis, also known as whooping cough.

Mike Bolen, the department’s administrator, said the contagious respiratory illness is caused by the Bordetella genus of bacteria and can be spread through coughing and sneezing.

Symptoms of pertussis include coughing fits followed by a whooping sound, at times accompanied by difficulty breathing, vomiting and exhaustion.

Those with pertussis often experience a runny nose, low-grade fever or mild cough in its initial stages.

Bolen said the disease is very serious for infants, young children and those with weakened immune systems.

He said the DTaP or TDaP vaccines are the most effective means to prevent or reduce spread of the disease and are available through the health department.

Appointments may be made by calling (304) 737-3665.

Bolen said whether visiting the health department or a medical facility, individuals should call ahead so staff can take precautions to prevent spread of the disease to others there.
