Weirton man facing child pornography charges
WEIRTON — A Weirton man is facing child pornography charges as part of an investigation by the West Virginia State Police.
James Louis Capito, 76, was arrested Monday on a warrant charging him with possession of child pornography, according to information released by the State Police.
According to online Magistrate Court records, Capito faces one count of distributing or exhibiting material depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct (600-plus images).
He appeared in Hancock County Magistrate Court Monday for an initial appearance, posting the $75,000 bond.
A hearing has been set for Dec. 11 before Magistrate Stephen Svokas.
The investigation, led by First Sgt. D.L. Stafford, is ongoing in coordination with the West Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Unit.
It began Feb. 12, when a search warrant was executed at Capito’s residence, with multiple items secured by law enforcement at the time.
Through an analysis conducted by a digital forensics laboratory, investigators located more than 3,000 videos allegedly containing child pornography on devices collected during the February search.
The Hancock-Brooke-Weirton Drug and Violent Crime Task Force has been involved in the investigation.
The case remains active, authorities said, adding other charges could be filed.
