Weirton native among WVU’s most loyal

Dr. Robert Gerbo

MORGANTOWN — A Weirton native is among those set to be honored as “most loyal” at West Virginia University.

Dr. Robert Gerbo has been named as this year’s Most Loyal Faculty/Professional Staff.

Gerbo has spent his entire professional career at WVU, earning both his undergraduate degree in biology and his medical degree from the university and completing his family medicine residency as chief resident.

For more than 35 years, Gerbo has contributed to the university through his teaching and service, including educating first-year medical students in the Physical Diagnosis and Clinical Integration courses for nearly 20 years and was recognized with the Vice President’s Outstanding Achievement in Teaching Award.

Beyond the classroom, Gerbo mentors students and delivers lectures to residents, faculty and community groups. Through his role as director of Occupational Medicine within the WVU School of Public Health, he provides physical exams for students taking part in mine rescue competitions, and recently was appointed as the university’s Faculty Athletics Representative. He campaigns for academic integrity within athletics and the Big 12 Conference.

In addition to Gerbo, those set to be recognized include David Hendrickson as Most Loyal West Virginian; Dr. David O’Neal as Most Loyal Alumni; and Anthony Martin as Most Loyal Staff Member.

All will be recognized during halftime festivities at the WVU football game against Colorado on Nov. 8.

To be considered for the honor, recipients must display the loyalty, ideals and goals of WVU and the state of West Virginia through professional and civic engagement, business, service and leadership.

The “Most Loyal” recipients are selected by a joint committee representing the WVU Foundation, WVU Alumni Association, WVU Staff Council, WVU Faculty Senate and the Mountaineer Week organizing committee.
