Manganese leading to discoloration

WEIRTON — The Weirton Area Water Board has reported the presence of increased levels of manganese in the city’s raw water supply is leading to discolored water being experienced by some customers.

As part of upgrades to the water treatment plant, water filter media was removed and replaced with new media. Once “ripened” the new media will assist in enhanced removal of manganese. Water plant staff have made adjustments to their treatment process in an effort to mitigate the issue.

The Water Board states current levels of manganese in the water supply are at 0.05 milligrams per liter, which is above non-mandatory water quality standards, but poses no health risk to the public.
