Scam reports received by police
WEIRTON — Weirton Police have received reports of alleged scam attempts where residents have been contacted by individuals claiming to be from the Weirton Police Department, demanding money for unpaid tolls.
Officials report those involved are threatening arrest and “serious allegations” to those who do not comply. The phone number is showing up as the department’s legitimate number, but the call is not being made by an officer, police note.
Officials remind residents the Weirton Police Department will not call and ask for money or personal information over the phone, advising those who receive such a call to hang up and report it to the dispatch center at (304) 797-8555.
