Hancock County Park Board to stay in place

NEW CUMBERLAND – The Hancock County Board of Parks and Recreation will be staying in place following Thursday’s meeting of the Hancock County Commission.

Thursday’s meeting included the second reading of a proposed ordinance which would have dissolved the volunteer board.

However, Commission President Eron Chek offered a motion to table the ordinance, citing a letter from the National Park Service concerning care of a park the county was not maintaining, and saying a plan is needed to address the issue.

Commissioners Tommy Ogden and Paul Cowey offered support for the county Park Board, as well as the need to have county maintenance personnel address physical needs at the county’s parks, with the two voting against the motion to table the dissolution ordinance.

With the vote against tabling, no additional motion was made, effectively killing the ordinance.

The first reading of the ordinance was held Feb. 12, receiving a 2-1 vote in favor of the proposal.

A work session was held last week to further discuss the issue.
