New Cumberland Council discussing Second Avenue parking
Craig Howell PARKING CONCERNS – New Cumberland Council met in regular session Monday, discussing parking on Second Avenue and several other issues.
NEW CUMBERLAND – City officials are continuing to look at concerns about parking in the area of Second Avenue, with one proposal to include restricting parking at intersections along the street.
“We’ve invited the residents,” Mayor Will White announced during Monday’s New Cumberland Council meeting, though officials noted no one living in the area of concern was in attendance at Monday’s meeting.
While no plans were finalized, council had discussed “making intersections ‘yellow curb’ on either side of Second Avenue.”
City Clerk Tammy Jenkins explained, while none were at Monday’s meeting, she had heard from some residents, who asked whether exceptions to any traffic control measures could be made in the event of a need for dedicated handicap parking or if a resident needs to rent a dumpster.
Police Chief Lester Skinner said exceptions can be made, if necessary, but also said this is an issue that has been puzzling the city for some time.
“No one can seem to figure out why there’s no parking,” he said.
Jenkins said she had reviewed city code and could not find any ordinances addressing parking there.
Officials also had raised the issue of parking in the area in 2024, with a focus then on both Second and Third avenues. Councilmember Penny Spilecki said, then, there were concerns over access as a result of the number of vehicles parked on the street.
Spilecki, who also is a member of the New Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department, said there have been issues of fire trucks being able to get through.
“That was our only issue,” she said Monday.
Officials previously noted not all residents in the area have enough off-street parking available, with prior suggestions including encouraging residents to park in nearby alleys, if possible.
