Youth Council members lend a hand to Salvation Army

Craig Howell HELPING OUT – Participants in the inaugural group of the City of Weirton’s Youth Council program spent time Saturday assisting the Weirton Salvation Army by sorting through some of the clothing donations which, eventually, will be available for purchase at the organization’s thrift store.

WEIRTON – Some of those participating in a city-sponsored youth program were able to see the work that goes into helping others Saturday.

A group from the City of Weirton’s Youth Council program spent part of their Saturday assisting the Salvation Army with sorting donating clothing which will later be available for purchase in the organization’s thrift store.

Maj. Tonya Roberts of the Salvation Army noted the importance of those from the community being willing to lend a hand.

“We need volunteers to help us,” she said. “It means a great deal.”

Revenue derived through the thrift store helps to provide funding for many of the Salvation Army’s programs, Roberts explained, including to purchase food for their pantry and provide utility assistance.

Beginning this week, the thrift store will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday for the Weirton location, and those interested in volunteering may call the Salvation Army weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Logan Cottrill was among the youth volunteering their time Saturday, saying the Youth Council program has shown them the importance of giving back to the community, and it’s something he’s found he enjoys.

“It means a lot to us. We enjoy doing it,” he said.

Jaxon Selman agreed, saying volunteering, and helping others, is a good use of their free time.

“I just enjoy helping people out,” Selman said.

Violetta Turianyn says she sees it as an opportunity to do something for others, and provide thanks for what the community provides for her and other residents.

“It’s a way I can show my appreciation,” she said.

Weirton Council established the Youth Council program last fall, opening it up to children in seventh through ninth grades who reside within the Weirton city limits. The goal is to offer an opportunity to learn about the community, and municipal government, while providing them with a seat at the table when it comes to discussing the future of the city.
