Police Memorial Day ceremony to honor 10 fallen Jefferson County officers
STEUBENVILLE — Fort Steuben Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 1’s annual Police Memorial Day ceremony will be Thursday in front of the Steubenville Municipal Building.
Steubenville Police Det. Ryan Lulla, president of Fort Steuben FOP, said this year’s remembrance will integrate the lodge’s fundraiser, a weekend oldies concert in the Berkman Amphitheater at Historic Fort Steuben Park.
Last year, 111 officers across the country died in service to their communities, 53 of them deemed “felonious” deaths — which includes 20 officers who died while responding to unlawful or suspicious activity, five during traffic stops and four in pursuit of suspects. Five other officers were “ambushed,” one of them a Lorain police officer murdered while he was eating his lunch. Two officers who were with him survived.
So far in 2026, a total of 38 line-of-duty deaths have been recorded in the United States.
Thursday’s ceremony, the cornerstone of the community’s Peace Officer Memorial Day observance, honors the 10 officers who gave their lives in the line-of-duty in Jefferson County since 1908. It will begin at 9 a.m., Lulla said.
“This year is Chief (Ken) Anderson’s last before he retires, so he’ll be reading the names of those 10 officers,” Lulla said.
Steubenville High School’s trumpeters will play, and City Schools’ Glori Dami will sing.
The concert, slated for 7-9 p.m. Saturday, will feature Impulse, an Akron oldies band.
“We’re asking for donations,” Lulla said. “Any money it brings in is for the FOP and it all goes back into the community. Last year the lodge made donations to some students who wanted to do mission trips, and some went to families with sick kids.”
Lulla said area residents who’d like to attend can make use of the benches in the amphitheater or bring their own chairs.
“We’ve always done a concert, but in the past it’s been separate from everything else,” he said. “Over the years they seem to be getting closer and closer together, so last year we sat down and decided to do it as one big celebration.”
