WEIRTON — The sounds of summer are set to return to the Weirton Event Center this weekend.
This year’s Friday Night Concert Series, organized by the City of Weirton, will kick off Friday with a performance by The Fantasy’s.
“We’re excited to bring the concert series back downtown,” Ward 4 Councilman Rick Stead said. “People look forward to it every year.”
The series will feature seven performances showcasing a variety of musical styles at the Event Center through the end of July.
Gates will open at 7 p.m. each week, with concerts beginning at 8 p.m.
This year’s lineup includes The Fantasy’s on May 22; Lights Out Presents – The Jersey Beach Boys on May 29; Twice as Nice and The Rumors Band on June 5; Fleetwood 2 the Max on June 19; Matt VanFossen on June 26; My So Called 90s Band on July 24; and Gospel Night on July 31.
Funds for the concert series are provided by the City of Weirton, with the schedule set by the Weirton Festival Committee under the Weirton Board of Parks and Recreation. Parks Executive Director Coty Shingle said the Park Board’s mission is to provide quality recreation for residents.
“We want to do everything we can to provide an enjoyable experience,” Shingle said.
Each concert night will include food and refreshments available for purchase, provided by local businesses and charitable organizations. Participants include the Special Olympics of Hancock County on May 22; Frank’s Vending on May 29; Coalition for Disability Inclusion on June 5; Rusty Bull Taco Co. on June 19; Back Alley BBQ on June 26; Taters Food Truck on July 24; and Refocus Christian Church and Cove Presbyterian Church on July 31.
A 50-50 drawing also will be held each night, with proceeds benefiting local organizations.
A shuttle service will run each week from 6:45-7:30 p.m. and again from 10 p.m. until all attendees are transported to their vehicles. Free parking is available at both the Event Center and Municipal Plaza lot.
“It’s important for the quality of life,” Mayor Dean Harris said. “It’s a great Friday night out.”
