WELLSBURG - Brooke County commissioners are moving forward with a plan to upgrade security measures at the county courthouse facilities with the purchase of two new X-ray machines.
As part of their meeting Tuesday morning, commissioners approved a bid from AutoClear Security Inspections Systems for the purchase of two X-ray machines to be used at the courthouse facility.
Bids for the machines were opened by the commission during its June 23 meeting.
The county received two bids on the project, with the AutoClear proposal coming in as the lowest bid. The other bid received - from Point Security Inc. – proposed a cost of $61,039.36, or $30,519.68 per machine.
Brooke County Sheriff’s Capt. Scott Zeigler offered a review of the two bids and support for the AutoClear proposal, noting the AutoClear model has been used in courthouses, schools, and prisons, while the Point Security system is primarily used in airports.
In addition, he said the AutoClear system has capabilities to scan from underneath, and can handle a weight of up to 331 pounds, with the proposal also including an extended roller system.
The Point Security system, meanwhile, handled 130 pounds and did not offer the other aspects, Zeigler said.
Zeigler also noted the AutoClear system was less complicated, which, he said, will be beneficial for the courthouse security staff.
"With us having rotating security guards, it’s easier to learn," he said.
The bid also includes a one-year warranty, with an option to extend the warranty at a cost of $3,800 per year.
In other business, Tuesday, commissioners acknowledged a second letter of interest in an open position on the county 911 Advisory Board. The letter, from Dawson Kemp, follows a previous letter from Richard Ferguson.
County Commissioner Tommy Diserio said it will be up to the board to consider the two applications.
"We’ll forward that letter of interest," Diserio said.
Commissioners also re-appointed Duane Heck to the Route 2/I-68 Authority Board as a representative of the county, noting no other letters of interest had been received, and re-appointed Marlene Sebeck to the Brooke County Library Board.
The county continues to seek interest in a second seat on the library board, as well as for seats on the Washington Pike Public Service District Board and the Brooke Hills Park Board.
